Chapter 9

Pippa

Pippa had spoken to her mother at length about the scene at brunch. She’d cried on her father’s shoulder. She’d prayed. She’d talked to her sister. But the one person she hadn’t exchanged words with was Chase.

At least not until they were on their way to the airport to fly to Boston for the remainder of the Blancbourg program. Taking the lessons Chase had learned out of the classroom and into real life was the practical portion that would offer him the opportunity to demonstrate that he’d learned his lesson and would improve his public image. She’d pleaded with Katerina a second time to switch students, but it was too late, impossible.

They traveled first class and although the leather seats were roomy, ignoring him was proving to be more and more difficult. She’d successfully distanced herself over the course of the week, fully inhabiting the role of teacher and not the lovesick teenager that threatened to rear her head at every opportunity.

Like when he smiled.

When he blinked.

When he breathed.

Being around him was painful. No, excruciating. Her chest felt hollow. Her eyes were itchy and dry even though half the time she felt an unsteadiness in her jaw like she wanted to cry.

Confirming that Chase stood to gain financially when he married made her wary that money was what he was actually after.

Mallory inserting herself into the situation made her worry and she didn’t exactly want him to be with her either. Mostly on principle.

However, she couldn’t get the look on Chase’s face while they were at brunch out of her head. It had been brief, but powerful at that moment before he left the restaurant. It was a message that she couldn’t decipher. Of course, he didn’t want to marry Mallory. She knew that, but he could have any number of women who’d make a good wife. It wouldn’t be her. Pippa wanted to marry for love and that was all.

Her sister’s solution to find him someone else to be with was the best she could come up with so when the flight attendant indicated they could use their electronic devices, Pippa opened a dating app on her phone. While still at Blancbourg, she’d created a profile for him and had practically broken the internet with the number of replies received. It was time to review the possibilities with him.

“I don’t blame you for not wanting to marry Mallory,” she said.

Chase startled as though accustomed to her silence. “That would be a disaster,” he said. His eyes drifted over her face and a smile started to build.

“But I have a solution. It’s approved by the Blancbourg Academy. We’ll spend the next few days finding you a suitable life partner.” Her voice sounded robotic so she tried to infuse it with a bit more enthusiasm as she explained the dating app.

Chase’s face fell into his hand. “Is this happening?”

“I think you’ll be very pleased. “Let’s see. There’s Melissa. She’s a veterinarian and look, she’s adopted twelve cats. How altruistic.”

“I’m allergic.”

Pippa scrolled down.
